Breakthrough!

Re. ferry between Iskenderun and Alexandria - if you want the fast version, do scroll down to the last follow up, October 30 and do read it.
If you are considering going from Turkey to Egypt by ferry you may find very usefull information down through this post. My advise: Don’t go!
And should yo decide to anyway then be very careful and be prepared to have to fight… But know that your odds are low.
Denmark – Ethiopia, October 19: Iskenderun, Turkey
I just came from the Turkish agent; BREAKTHROUGH and relief! For I have paid my ticket and the boat for Alexandria leaves with my mc on Monday, October 21, 2013. I fly the following day.
As of Spring 2013 there are no ferries to Egypt from neither Greece nor from Turkey. SISA LINES closed early 2013 due to insolvency.
And all other lines have closed – temporarily or permanently. The following is the only current alternative to shipping.
So here is the deal:
To go with a vehicle between Turkey and Egypt there is a weekly departure of a boat/flight. There are no passenger ferries, only boats for vehicles.
They usually depart during weekends, sometimes Saturday, sometimes Sunday (due to the festival of Eid al-Adha this departure was postponed). You purchase a combined ticket, boat transport for vehicles and flight for passengers. The agent in Iskenderun is Remon Travel, web site.
Price for 1 person with mc one way: 700 US dollars
The price includes:
- Boat transfer of 1 motor cycle; takes 24 hrs.
- Flight ticket; direct chartered flight the following day
- Taxes in Iskenderun
- Carriage service from port to ship in Iskenderun
- Transfer bus from airport to port in Alexandria
The price does not include:
- Transfer to the airport in Iskenderun, can be arr. for 15 TYR
- Taxes in Egypt
- Carriage service from ship to port in Egypt
Follow-up Monday October 21, 2013
This morning we checked-in the mc at the port of Iskenderun. It was smooth and took 2½ hours: meeting at Remon Travel, going with a representative to the port, registering the mc at the port, arranging carriage service, getting customs receipt and finally visiting the customs office, Iskenderun Gümrük, located close to the train station, between city center and the port (walkable from the port, 15-20 minutes walk South and turn right by the train station).
Customs is – as you are probably well aware – important as you cannot leave the country without paying if your vehicle is not cleared from your passport.
Be advised that the Gümrük Office closes at 12:00 noon. You will find the right counter on the 9th. floor.
For the check-in of a vehicle the following is needed:
- copy of passport
- copy of customs entry stamps in passport
- copy of the insurance document (customs accepted it in Danish)
- copy of the mc registration
The shipping line is called UN RO-RO, their web site.
Today the information is that the ship is sailing on Tuesday Oct. 22. This means that I most probably fly on Wednesday. Remon Travel will receive the final details about the charter flight on the day of the departure of the ship.
It also appears that you can sail with the ship. But since it is mostly trucks with freight, the limited places are apparently sold out quite some time in advance.
Check this out with the shipping line directly – but be in good time. It is also possible to deal directly with the port and not go through the travel agent.
I don’t know the price difference, but if you understand the process it seems relatively easy. And people are generally very helpful. Still be prepared to take longer time as very few Turks speak English.
Follow-up Tuesday October 22, 2013
I now have the flight details. Like anticipated the flight is tomorrow, the day after the departure of the ship.
It’s an early flight departure, 06:45 and Remon Travel has been so kind to help me with an airport transfer bus, departing Iskenderun at 03:00 and arriving at the airport at approx. 04:00.
Follow-up October 30, 2013
Keywords: trap, scam, mafia-like methods, rip-off, large cash guarantees with no guarantee of refunding, travelers beware! Don’t go this way!
I had to abandon my mc inside the free port warehouse of Port Damietta. Ahmad too had to abandon his high-class Range Rover in the hands of the customs officials.
Their fate is as yet unknown. Options of recovering without paying LARGE sums in bribe, under the table fees, more fees, hidden fees and cash guarantees… are very small.
Apart from having to pay the customs clearing agent – first 751 US dollars, then 450, then 350… furthermore I for one had to pay more in cash guarantee [triptik than the price of the mc.
And despite having my insurance and other documents in order I had to do this by going to Cairo… CAIRO! too pay and return. The refunding of the cash guarantee can only, ONLY be made in Cairo.
This means I would have to cross the border to Sudan, drive to Khartoum, take a flight to Cairo, get mo money back – maybe, and according to a customs agent, the only person who SEEMED to have just a little honour and honesty in him… that is a BIG maybe.
Then I would have to return by flight to Khartoum. In the meantime I would have customs problems in Khartoum for leaving the country without my mc, for this means import and paying tax.
You see? It never ends. And as Ahmad said to me: they are all lying! And they are all involved. My advice: forget about taking your vehicle to Egypt!
